Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a major cause of tooth loss in adults.  It is caused by accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth.  Plaque and tartar are filled with bacteria.  This accumulation leads to infection of soft tissue and loss of bone supporting the teeth.  Once the bone is lost, the teeth become loose and without treatment will require extraction.

Gum disease is often painless.

For this reason, it is imperative to undergo routine dental care in order for the disease to be diagnosed at an early and treatable stage.  We provide a thorough periodontal examination to ensure early detection.  The treatment for gum disease varies depending on the severity, but often involves a thorough dental cleaning known as scaling and root planing.

There are many factors that increase the risk of gum disease which include poor oral hygiene, smoking, genetics, certain medications and pregnancy.  Some studies have suggested that severe gum disease may be associated with other health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or stroke.  This finding supports the importance of early detection and treatment.
