Prevention

At Colden Dental Care, prevention of dental disease is the focus of our practice!

Dental caries (tooth decay) is the most prevalent childhood disease and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) affects more than twenty-five percent of U.S. children two to five years of age and fifty percent of adolescents twelve to fifteen years of age.  This disease continues in adulthood and a significant portion of the population has untreated tooth decay.

Given the statistics, it is imperative to prevent the onset of dental caries.  Sealants, fluoride, professional dental cleanings and good home care are key preventive measures that will significantly reduce the incidence of tooth decay.

Health Care Statistics

According to the American Dental Association, nearly half of adults over age thirty suffer from some form of gum disease.  Professional dental cleanings and optimal home care prevent gum disease and thereby tooth loss.

Regular dental care is essential to a healthy mouth.  It is our practice to perform a comprehensive oral health evaluation that includes inspection of the teeth, bones and soft tissue during every dental examination.  This comprehensive assessment includes an oral cancer screening.

Proper Brushing Techniques

At Colden Dental care we recommend the use of Sonicare tooth brushes.  These are available for purchase at our office.  The following video demonstrates some tips for their optimal use to get the best results.

Dental
Sealants
Sealants act as a barrier to prevent tooth decay.  The back teeth often develop with deep grooves.  These grooves can be smaller than a toothbrush bristle making them impossible to clean properly.  This leads to tooth decay.A dental sealant is a plastic that is flowed into these grooves and cured, thereby sealing these grooves and preventing decay.  It is best to seal teeth soon after they erupt before decay has a chance to occur. Our office only uses BPA-FREE dental sealants.
Fluoride
Treatment
Fluoride helps to strengthen developing and unerupted teeth.  It also protects and remineralizes teeth that are fully developed and erupted.In-office fluoride treatments are offered at every cleaning appointment. Fluoridation of the community water is also discussed and a determination is made as to whether prescription systemic fluoride supplementation is recommended for your child.  Topical fluoride toothpaste or mouth rinse is also prescribed for high-risk adults.
Hygiene
Appointments
Professional dental cleanings are critical to achieving a healthy smile!  Our office is equipped with many advanced hygiene aids to provide a successful outcome.  Among these are the Cavitron® and Prophy-Jet®.The Cavitron® is a high-powered ultrasonic cleaning device that quickly removes calcified deposits from the teeth. The Prophy-Jet® is an air-polishing device that polishes teeth and helps to prevent future accumulation of plaque and tartar. To ensure successful treatment results, an individualized home hygiene regimen is also formulated.

It is our goal to provide patient-centered comprehensive care with a personalized approach that addresses the unique needs of each patient.
